Logo
Pinehurst, NC is famous for its many golf courses, as well as for being the host of the U.S. Open twice. The town is small and elegant, so I wanted to reflect the greenery of the golf courses and the professionalism of the community in the colors and shapes of the logo.
First Baptist Pinehurst was leaning toward a more modern logo rather than the traditional style of many religious organizations. I wanted to incorporate a cross into the logo to keep in line with the religious symbolism, but I enjoyed experimenting with a more abstract approach.
I settled on this logo because there could be two versions: one with words, and one without. These two versions would carry the same recognizable symbol regardless of the title below it.
Overall, I found the process of sketching, comparing, and experimenting to be extremely fruitful, as I would never have thought of this final product right off the bat.
I found that the concept of shape played a large role in my design of the graphic. I started out with a diamond shape because I wanted to show elegance and cleanliness through the sharp edges and soothing colors.
As I began to play around with the design, I noticed that the center edges of the shape could resemble a cross. This wasn't a traditional cross shape, but it was recognizable in the context of being a church's logo.
When I had isolated the cross, I used the concepts of position and value to illustrate what the most important piece of the design was. The cross shape is at the forefront of the logo, with the other green shapes providing a backdrop on which the cross is contrasted beautifully.
The colors I ended up using reflect the greenery of Pinehurst, as well as emoting a sense of peace and calm.
The final product is intended to provide a sense of Pinehurst's modernity and elegance, as well as a peaceful sense of community and faith.
The design principle I found to be most prevalent in my own experience was the principle of contrast. I used contrast in both the text and the graphic to make important information stand out.
In the text, "Pinehurst" is written in a gray font to show that it is a subsection of a larger organization: First Baptist. There are many First Baptist churches around the area, so I wanted people to immediately recognize that this was the Pinehurst branch. Using the different colors in the font helped make both the "First Baptist" and the "Pinehurst" more noticeable.
The graphic uses contrast to make the cross stand out from the green shapes. I didn't want all the pieces to fit together like a puzzle, as that would have not had the same layered, 3D effect as I was looking for. I had to position the green shapes in the perfect way to make sure that the white cross had a contrasting background. By using this method, I didn't have to put a border around the white at all, leaving it much more abstract and smooth.
